Low WAN speed

Hi, all,

I've been using ESXi 5.1.0 (1065491) for a couple of months.

I have three Windows Sever 2003 VMs on it. Light use on all.

Only one physical NIC is being used on the host.

The good: on the LAN (from any VM to physical machines, physical to VM, VM to VM), it's not amazing, but from each of those machines I get good speeds of 0.6-0.7Gbps. 75-80MB/s is not bad. Everything has Gbps NICs on the LAN.

The Sonicwall firewall is 100Mbps port.

The bad: Through WAN, when one downloads from our webserver (which is on a VM on ESXi), it starts out about the max our ISP gives us for upstream: about 6-7Mbps, or ~750KB/s. After a couple of seconds it starts slowing down and it does ~250KB/s for the rest of the download. I have tried in the dead of night, to where I "know" for sure nobody's using the internet connection.

I KNOW nothing has changed on the firewall or on the machines, besides the fact that 3 months ago they were physical machines. Their LAN static IPs are the same. Everything is the same. When they were physical machines, WAN download speeds (uploading from my webserver to WAN user) were always in line with what our ISP allows, roughly 750KB/s.

Are there some tweaks I can try in ESXi? I don't know where to start. I am not an expert. Just a dude that was excited to turn three energy-inefficient dinosaurs into fast VMs.

Thank you,

RC
